Keeping in Touch with Connected DCRC (weekending 18112011)

The week ending on Friday 18th was an interesting cross section of DCRC activity. We held two events related to of our Connected Communities projects, concerning community use of digital media and the kinds of value produced in the Pervasive Media Studio network.

On Tuesday 15th November we were pleased to host Art Brock for a studio visit. Art gave a great talk about his research concerning currencies. His key opening questions were: 'How good a job does money do in tracking value? How good is money in tapping into the 'value' of someone? Is money effectively accomplishing the things we want it to accomplish?' In ensuing discussions we collectively explored how we might think about recording or 'making visible' flows of value between participants in a network, such as the studio. This very much a part of the discussions in our Connected Communities project with Visiting Professor Bill Sharpe and Goetz Bachmann (Goldsmiths), you can read more on the Connected DCRC project page.

On Friday 18th November, Constance Fleuriot and Carolyn Hassan (Knowle West Media Centre) led the concluding event for our Connected Communities project 'Keeping in Touch'. This event included the presentation of a report of the scoping review conducted by Clodagh Miskelly (available here), which concerned projects across the UK that use everyday technologies such as mobiles with the avowed aim of strengthening community.

The event generated lively discussion and enabled us to continue the valuable conversation between practitioners who use Knowle West Media Centre and the DCRC about the shifting state of community media production. Constance Fleuriot has written a fuller account of the day on this blog. This research has already spawned a new project that is currently seeking funding support.

On the near horizon we have two events: this week we have Yvonne Buchheim hosting ÜBERSONG, a night of experimental song, art and performance at Chapter Theatre in Cardiff. ÜBERSONG takes place tomorrow, 23rd November, from 8:00pm - please see the Chapter website. On 1st December, Tom Abba is taking part in the Bristol Festival of Ideas' "Bristol Genius" series. Tom is giving a talk entitled 'This isn't the future of the book', which will discuss his ongoing research into digital publishing and specifically addressing the question how do digital platforms change the nature of the book? Please see the event page, or book with Festival of Ideas.

Finally, the deadline has been extended for proposals for i-Docs 2012, a two-day event dedicated to the rapidly evolving field of interactive documentary - you are still able to send submissions until 28th November. Please see the i-Docs event page for more details.
