Playing critically (Weekending 291010)
In the final week of October, DCRC staff have been reflecting upon play. We have also had some interesting discussions about research methods and had confirmation of a panel session for a conference in January.
As Prof. Jon Dovey has already blogged, DCRC were delighted to host Mary Flanagan, artist and writer on gaming, who gave a seminar in the Pervasive Media Studio. Mary's talk concerned the geometries of power instantiated by urban 'pervasive', or 'big', games. Flanagan thus offered a schema for 'making meaningful games', which Jon has concisely summarised in his blog post.
Earlier in the week Jon Dovey and Constance Fleuriot participated in a user testing session of a pervasive media experience created by knowledge exchage partners Calvium. Jon and Constance were joined by Helen Kennedy and a youthful team of keen participants in giving Calvium's latest offering a thorough testing in a well-known London tourist spot. Stay tuned for more information!
DCRC continued its series of collaborative seminars with Futurelab staff on the theme of 'users and agents' with some interesting discussion of methods for addressing activites of technologically mediated play. Dan Dixon broadened this to thinking about 'big' games more generally and their cultural specificities.
Finally, DCRC received confirmation this week that our panel concerning the 'promise and problematic of pervasive media' has been accepted for the MeCCSA 2011 conference, in January. We will post abstracts for the constituent talks and a little further contextual information in due course.
