A week of Fusion (week ending 17022012)

The week ending 17th February saw the ongoing application of DCRC research in teaching made manifest in the Pervasive Media Studio through the Fusion labs and Masters level teaching. The week is the 128th of DCRC's activity. As many will know, 128-bit key size encryption is a common form of security across the internet, not least in IP v.6, and ASCII includes definitions for 128 characters.

The studio buzzed with activity towards the end of the week as current UWE students and alumni have been working with the BBC on a pilot project to develop Second Screen experiences for broadcast. This 'Fusion Lab' pilot launched at the Pervasive Media Studio on Friday 20th January, and this week saw two intensive days of activity. On Friday the students were very generously supported by Matt Williams and Ben Evans from Hazard Media, who have been offering tips and techniques based on their real world experience of delivering pilot second screen applications for the BBC.

We were also really excited to hear this week that Mandy Rose has been invited to a summit on the 'New Arts of Documentary' to be held at MIT, in association with the comparative media programme, next month. We will post more on this nearer to the time. However, it is also worth noting that Mandy has a busy month - with a guest lecture at Goldsmiths on 23rd February, the Czech Institute of Documentary Film has invited Mandy as a guest tutor for their 'East Doc Platform' event between 8th and 10th March, and Mandy is presenting at Media and Participation, International Conference, at the Media and Communication Research Department, Lund University, Sweden, on 29th March.

Following Sam Kinsley's successful luncthime talk at the Pervasive Media Studio concerning 'Design Fiction', Sam has been invited to speak as part of Design Wales Form's '10 things I've Learnt'. The event on 9th March is a one day speaker event with eight presentations that covers aspects of design, technology and business strategy. More information is available on the website for the event. You can also read an excellent write-up of the talk by Jason Howell on the studio website.

We would like to remind you that tickets are still available for i-Docs 2012, to be held on 22nd March, please see the registration page.
