B-Open Artist commission
DCRC in collaboration with the Bristol City Council Digital Agency - Connecting Bristol are delighted to announce a new B-Open artists commission.
We have commissioned leading UK media artists Harwood and Yokokoji (YoHa), to work with the city to produce a new public artwork that will make visible data that the city council collects.
B-Open is one of the digital city projects being developed by Connecting Bristol in support of the 20-20 City Strategy, which aims to position Bristol as one of Europe's leading creative, digital cities.
B-Open is about openly sharing council/city data and working with local digital businesses and communities to create new applications and services that bring added value to citizens and help achieve greater connection with the city environment.
Graham Harwood and Matsuko Yokokoji (YoHa, the Japanese word for 'aftermath') have lived and worked together since 1994. YoHa's graphic vision and technical tinkering have powered several celebrated collaborations including. Harwood and Yokokoji's co-founding of the artists group Mongrel (1996-2007) specialising in digital media and established the Mediashed, a free-media lab in Southend-on-sea (2005-2008). In 2008 they joined long time collaborator, Richard Wright to produce Tantalum Memorial winning the Transmediale first prize for 2009. Tantalum Memorial also featured at ZeroOne Biennial - USA, Manifesta07 - Italy, Science Museum London, University of Plymouth and TAP Southend - UK, UKS - Norway, Ars Electronica - Austria, Plug.in - Switzerland, Laboral Centro Spain. YoHa's recent work includes 'Coal Fired Computers' and 'Tantalum Memorial' can be seen at the Arnolfini until Nov 21.
Professor Jon Dovey said, 'We are thrilled to secure YoHa for his commission, we are looking forward to working with them to construct one of their trademark 'contraptions' that will show some of the ways that data shapes our city'.
